Happy Halloween!

The ghost and goblins celebration has arrived! It took a full three minutes in the car this morning before Ghostbusters, Thriller or The Monster Mash came on. That must be some kind of record. Thriller was the winner and, in my humble opinion, it always should be so. Mancub will be out trick o' treating with his buddies tonight and I've been tasked with making his costume and doing his make-up. It's exciting to once again transform him into a Zombie fright. Fingers crossed (or they'll rot off.) Edited to add photos of him below, recreated. I destroyed a Tommy Hilfiger dress shirt that cost $3.00 at the thrift store with coffee grounds, soy sauce, red craft paint and used his Momma's cosmetics and hair products. He's thrilled. Priceless.

One thing I will be happy to see the last of for another year is the halloween emails. For at least six weeks they've been coming fast and furious. So many emails. So many ghosts and pumpkins and lame subject lines.  How many times can one read "Spook-tacular Sale" before declaring one is not having a Happy Halloween? As for "No Tricks - Only Treats" frankly, your prices say otherwise.  Shout-out to Sobey's for the most original: "Let's Give Them Pumpkin To Talk About." Moi does appreciate a good musical pun.

Tidbits from the email stash:
My blog, so I get to indulge myself with sweet memories: Kitty & McHeaty doing the pumpkin prep and Belle giving face in the costume she hated with the fire of a thousand suns. She worked it though. Finally, Mancub, then and now.

A little mood music to see you off courtesy of Le Chat Noir. Stay safe and enjoy!

Dear Pinterest

I've been looking through my feed and noticed a bit of a trend. What exactly are you trying to say?

A little something as we head into the most frightful weekend of the year; Bubble, bubble, toil and trouble...

Kids and Costumes

🎧🎃 Kid-Safe Halloween Playlist 👻

The days are flying by and All Hallow's Eve is almost upon us. That will be shocking to some parents, either because they've been toiling away creating the perfect costume that's turned out to be more difficult than expected, or are realizing they put it off too long and selection is kind of picked over. Trust me, I've been both. Over the years I've purchased adorable (expensive) costumes, DIY'd creative ones, and sewn popular requests. In the end, each of them have their own memories attached and what really matters is that the kiddies have fun. I spent way too much time on Pinterest last night and some of these had me in stitches. For your inspiration:

Oh, tears streamed down my face at that little Queenie! If that wasn't enough inspiration for you, take a look at 75 Fun and Easy DIY Halloween Costumes Your Kid Will Love.  or buy one of these 60 Kid's Halloween Costumes for the Uncrafty. There's no shame in admitting one is uncrafty. We put so much pressure on ourselves and time provides clairty.

Perhaps one of the worst ones for me as a parent now makes me howl with laughter. The month after I left my children's father and was living in a tiny room at a shelter with two little ones and a baby in a crib, my sister thought it would be a treat to make costumes for six kids.

I cried in the fabric store.

It was one of those ugly meltdowns you think can't happen to real people and when it happened to me I fled. She had to apologize to staff and other customers as she whisked all the children out the door. The cost of every yard of fabric, button and notion was sickening to me as I faced an uncertain future with no income and no idea how I alone would meet all of my children's needs. I couldn't even get them costumes!

She meant well, and though it really wasn't the best time for an enormous project like that, we persisted. Many, many frustrating hours later, the costumes were finally ready for the big night.

It snowed.

A lot.

No autumnal frisky flakes to be had.

We got a dumping of the white stuff with howling winds that could knock a small child over. Belle ended up in her snowsuit bundled under mounds of blankets as I attempted to push her stroller through white hell. Luckily we'd made the costumes large enough to fit over coats, because we are Canadian, after all. Our boys were M&M packages, both plain and peanut variety, but it lost some effect when their faces were hidden by scarves and their toque-clad heads appeared to be blobs plopped on top of the package.

Kitty was a puffy Sailor Moon looking smart in her dress stretched over an already generous parka and weather appropriate accessories. With the snow pants, hat, scarf and boots, she could barely navigate the hall let alone the snow covered streets. Not to be outdone, my niece was some other sailor kid, also puffy, sporting her dress yanked over her coat, accompanied by what may have been the latest fashion on igloo runways that year. At least I think it was my niece. It could have been the neighbour's kid for all we could tell.

Bless my sister's oldest child. Only a few years older than them, he was out there with us, herding what was quickly beginning to resemble a gang of fat, pissed off cats in some weird manhunt cosplay. I think we were out for a total of 20 minutes before they begged to go home.

I hated my sister a little bit that week.

But as it does, time passes and things get better. My Power Ranger, Little Black Cat and Minnie Mouse did not object to the colour coordination on a different Halloween. Please excuse the smudges on this old photo. It's got a special place in my heart.

Every year, Mancub reminds me of the Zombie costume I'd made for him years ago. Ironically, zombies are always the last-minute lifesavers. The deal his parents have is that whomever he's with the week prior to Halloween ensures he has a costume ready. He'd been with his dad. Imagine how delighted we all were when he was dropped off at 3 pm on Halloween without a costume. Did I forget to mention that Kitty was in the middle of moving? She had to hand over the keys first thing in the morning and I don't know which of them wanted to cry more.

When Moi is motivated, Moi can produce. One hour later, just as it began to get dark, the ghoul appeared, ready to frighten the neighbourhood and bag the free candy. It took the sacrifice of one pair of jeans, a white t-shirt and some dude's flannel shirt along with a pair of scissors, a piece of rope, his mom's hair gel and make-up bag, dirt from the garden, grass from the lawn, and very motivated grandmother energy to create what is still his all-time favourite costume. The kid looked wicked good, his friends were impressed, and I needed a shower. It thrills me that he still remembers and speaks so fondly of what could have been a disaster.

So whether you buy a costume or make one doesn't really matter. Keeping it all in perspective and staying in the moment are valuable lessons children learn from watching us. Then again, my advice may be useless because when I saw this adorable little taco...

my mind raced to all the doggie costumes parents could make use of on their crawling babies. Twisted, I know.

Chonky Punkin

🎧 The Witches Are Back

This adorable little guy was looking at me in 2009 - probably thinking how grateful he was for all the spiffy duds. You're welcome, child.

Forgive me another granny moment, but tonight he went into the pizza place to pick up dinner and when his almost 6' tall frame walked out, I was thunderstruck again. Where did the time go??? Xbox and his friends are starting to win the battle for his company but luckily he still wants those moments. Moments like decorating for Halloween, witch he is excited about. Yes, I wrote that. Nervy, huh?

Spooky SZN continues and there are ideas a'plenty. I see a lot of home-made pumpkin bread, pie, crumble, muffins, cupcakes and face masks in my future.

Last week I thought it would be a good idea to pop into my Pinterest to get a few fun ideas to share. While I adore the app and my eleventy billion 'must remember this' pins, it's easy to get sucked into a never-ending loop that makes time disappear in a frightening way. I fought my way out and brought a few thousand things to blog about. But now I am sick and cranky so if you want to spook up your food, beauty game, and enjoy a delightful beverage you'll have to do some of the work.

Wet Start to Spooky SZN

Good Monday to you! It's rainy here today - there was a pounding downpour during the night - and while I enjoy the sound of it, the change in air pressure can spark wicked headaches. Sure enough, I woke up with what feels like a migraine brewing and screen time is a bit of a nightmare.

One of the fun things about contesting is discovering new companies and products I'd never know about. For weeks my email has been inundated with Halloween promotions. It's almost scary. Here's a few standouts. Keep in mind there will be more in the coming days because somewhere along the way, Halloween stopped being an occasion just pushed the last two weeks of October - now, it's a SZN.🎃 Act, dress and behave accordingly, or face frightening consequences.

Canadian companies always catch my eye, especially ones owned and run by women. Hamilton, Ontario's Hayley Elsaesser is new-to-me and I love how she proves comfortable fashion can be super fun. There's something for everyone in their Spooky SZN offerings. I'm hankering for the Ghostie Ghost long sleeve midi dress. The Skeleton dog shirts are hilarious, and I'd give almost anything to send Kitten and Belle a Spider Print Longline Sports Bra & Leggings, but that's a joke out of my price range.

For the very wee ones, BuyBabyBuy has 25% OFF of the sweetest Halloween themed attire for The Bebes. Tea Collection has the most adorable, easiest Halloween styles for the bigger Wee Ones (and I would like the Dragon Head Hoodie in growed up, size large, for everyday life please.)

I'm still mad at Jane, but Halloween is no time for petty...the season calls for over-the-top, in-your-face creepiness, right? That isn't sustainable long-term though. If this is going to be a whole damn season, we're going to need to add wearable pieces for at least a few weeks, right? How could I not share these cute tees for my American friends looking for a little simple but on-point addition to their fall wardrobes? We'll get to costume specific content in a later post in the coming weeks, but for anyone with a Bridgerton obsession, here's some hints on how to make your own Regency-inspired creation.

Finally, the noms! Thematic food doesn't just happen with the waving of a wand. You need ingredients that may not be a staple in your pantry and presenting it the way you want takes planning so here's 40 Foods in the Spirit. (I respectfully disagree any food is too spooky to snack on though.) Thanks to Youtube, Mancub has become obsessed with Japanese candy, and though I can't do it for this Halloween, his Christmas gift might include a subscription from Japan Candy Box - their Halloween edition is ready to go and would be a treat for anyone with a sweet tooth in need of regular feeding.  Nobody knows better than Candy Fun House that goodies aren't just for trick 'o treaters, but they're ready for one of their busiest times of year with all the gooey ghoulish yummies.

And the puns wrote themselves. Bad dump bump, tssss.

Hippity Hop

If you've never been on a Blog Hop, it's a fun way to find new blogs that might interest you, while easily entering a lot of giveaways. The hop is sponsored by like-minded bloggers to draw in new readers and the prizes are as varied as opinions. In the past, I've had great luck winning blog giveaways, as the number of entries is lower than a huge campaign sponsored by The Big Boys. This is the latest one I've seen, but there's so much going on I haven't waded in yet.

You can Enter the Fabulous Fall Hop for a chance to win one of three prizes of Thor: Love and Thunder Digital in the Review Wire's giveaway and continue the hop, or just leave it at that for now. My strategy is obviously hop, hop, hop my tail off - but you do you, bunnyboo.

Today has been spent trying to organize some  things that were spinning out of control, simply because I let them. This was making my ADHD/OCD brain hurt. I'm feeling much better but am currently in a fight with Blogger called: IMRIGHTYOUREWRONGJUST JUSTIFYIT!

Mancub made us lunch - shrimp in the air fryer, so delish - and we had a chance to gab while watching cake-decorating videos. His choice, he says he finds watching it satisfying, so it's not like Grandma is making him sit with her to watch the Wheel of Fortune. There aren't enough words to describe how nice it feels when he says, "We make a lot of things together, even when they don't turn out exactly the same, we go with it and it turns out awesome!" If there's one thing I've taught my kids and grandson, it's how to McGuyver almost anything.

There was a really neat one I think we'll try in the lead up to Halloween: chocolatey goodness covered in orange frosting and gooey marshmallow to look like spider web. Cake pop spiders with chocolate covered pretzels for legs and googly bloodshot eyes adorn it. It's just so camp! That's one reason everything about Halloween is fun for me - there are NO rules. Of course, having a young partner-in-crime makes for hilarious ideas and attempts at baking, crafting, and decorating. Subpar results mean less than the process. There's also a special little kick I get poking Kitten's boundaries through the kid. She won't refuse a cake he's helped make, but she'll be all dramatic about the spiders, and that's funny to watch. I truly believe if it was prepared by me alone, she'd decline. Where does this penchant for drama come from?!? I know. Of course I know.

As proud as I am of the young women my girls are, they are ridiculously, stereotypically girly about insects, and spiders in particular: two nights ago a praying mantis somehow got into Kitten's room and it sounded like the front line of an alien invasion. Unfortunately, the mantis was decapitated during battle. It defies logic that a grown, very capable, woman screams for Mama to kill an oogely boogely. If it had been an alien invasion, I might have let them take her. This morning I got a text from Belle, with video, about her waking up with a spider on her ceiling fan. As she lives alone, she had to fight that skirmish on her own, but the follow up video of her and the cat snuggled on the couch made me laugh. There is so much love in my heart for that cat, for so many reasons, the least of which is she seemed in total agreement with, "I know. That was scary, right?"

My Kitten and Belle are not built for the bunny trail.

TGI Feel Me Better

My Go To Feel Me Better Tunes

Have you ever been told, "YOU should write a book!" I bet you have. Did you think, "Shuuuure. It can't be hard. I'll get right on that . . . " as the molten sarcasm sap tried to explode from your pores? Shocking, I know, but having been through some things and possessing a modicum of writing ability will not do the trick. Whatever the trick actually IS escapes me today.

This has been the least productive day of writing since I decided the time had finally come to settle   in and give it a real go. Maybe my own mind is blocking me. I've been in some bad internal places the past few days. Weirdly, the passing of Queen Elizabeth II yesterday has made it worse, triggering feelings about my mom. Hard. Since she died, pictures of Her Maj began to morph in with my memories and emotions, especially of Mum's quick decline. With each news story on the monarch's health that I read over the last year, another fierce feeling of protectiveness would wash over me. Being aware it's classic transference for my feelings orphans helps identify it. Dealing with it is another story. I'm not sobbing, but I am hurting in that deja vu way living with grief makes us experts at. Of sweeter memory, it was also something about their smiles, lighting up a room. I miss it. Today, I can't even pretend to write a book. I'll sit with this strange grief soup for a bit.

Giving myself that permission, and acknowledging my concentration is shot, finally led to surfing. Not the healthy, soak up the sun and surf, gnarly kind. The wicked kind. The big WWW. You know.

The result after having hours sucked away? Not much. Except, now I need to BUY THIS:

And whip up some Beef & Stout  delish in the kitsh:

And MAKE THESE beauties!

Because lordty, lordty, I can't think of a reasonable argument to stop me. Mancub will think it's hilarious and that's enough motivation for Moi to make a stupid craft.  Maybe we can create them together on the sly, then force Kitten to wear them to work and school? Heheh. That cheered me up.

Have a great weekend. Stay safe and make the most of where you're at.

If you can, buy cute drinks.
